Alzheimer’s CSF biomarker panel
Amyloid and tau measured directly, rather than inferred from symptoms.
A lumbar puncture sample is analysed for amyloid beta 42/40 ratio, phosphorylated tau and total tau. The pattern distinguishes Alzheimer’s pathology from other causes of cognitive decline with considerably more confidence than cognitive testing alone.
It is usually combined with MRI and neuropsychological assessment in a single visit. The result is interpreted by a neurologist — the numbers alone are not a diagnosis.
What it does not do
- It is an invasive test. Coagulation status and consent requirements apply.
- A biomarker result changes management only when it is read alongside imaging and clinical findings.
- It is not a screening test for healthy adults without cognitive symptoms.
