Neurology and healthy ageing at Lecheng
Cognitive assessment that uses biomarkers rather than guesswork, and rehabilitation that continues after the diagnosis.
Cognitive decline is where families most often arrive with a folder of scans and no answer. The zone’s value here is diagnostic rigour: cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, functional imaging and neuropsychological testing read together by a neurologist, usually within a single visit.
For patients already diagnosed, the second half of the trip can be rehabilitation and structured care — which is also where the zone’s wellness and TCM facilities become useful rather than decorative.
| Typical stay | 5–10 days for assessment; 2–4 weeks for rehabilitation programmes |
| Hospitals | 3 |
| Listed therapies | 0 |
| Routing time | 3–7 working days |
This is probably for you if
- Progressive cognitive symptoms without a clear diagnosis after standard workup
- A family history of early-onset dementia, where a precise diagnosis changes decisions
- Post-stroke or post-surgical rehabilitation that needs to be intensive and supervised
- A patient who can tolerate a lumbar puncture, or for whom it can be substituted
This is probably not for you if
- Acute confusion, sudden change in function, or suspected stroke — emergency care first
- You are looking for unproven "brain rejuvenation" infusions; we do not arrange those
- Advanced frailty where travel itself carries more risk than the information gained
The honest comparison
| At home | Regional hub | Here | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Access to newer therapies | Not registered, or not reimbursed | Registered, often self-pay | Reachable before national registration |
| Time to a specialist opinion | Weeks to months | Days to weeks | Typically 3–7 working days |
| Language on site | Your own language | English widely available | English at the desk, interpreter on the ward |
| Cost for the same procedure | Baseline | Mid to high | Materially lower for self-pay patients |
Comparative rows describe typical patterns, not a quote. Prices and waiting times vary by procedure, insurer and season.
A typical sequence
| Day 1 | Arrival, registration, baseline bloodwork |
| Day 2–3 | Imaging and specialist consultation; additional tests if the picture is unclear |
| Day 4 | Written plan and quotation from the hospital |
| Day 5 onward | Treatment, or a decision not to proceed |
| Final day | Discharge summary, imaging, medication, records in English |
Stays of 7–21 days are normal in this pathway. If your assessment is inconclusive, the sequence stops at day 4 — that is a real possibility and you should budget for it.
Five questions
- Which biomarker or imaging result would actually change the treatment plan?
- Who reads the results, and will I get a written report in English?
- If the diagnosis is confirmed, what changes at home — and can my physician there act on it?
- Is a repeat assessment needed, and at what interval?
- How much of the rehabilitation can be continued after I return?
Ask these of the hospital, not only of us. A hospital that cannot answer the first one clearly is a hospital to walk away from.
Hospitals delivering this pathway
Boao Super Hospital
The zone's shared platform. Most international patients start here because the special-access catalogue and the multidisciplinary teams are concentrated in one building.
Ruijin Hospital Hainan
Ruijin's Hainan campus exports the Shanghai department structure and case-management standards, including the airway basal-cell programme for COPD.
Boao Yiling Life Care Centre
Built for longer stays: rehabilitation, TCM and lifestyle programmes with residential accommodation on site. Useful as the recovery leg of a surgical trip.
If your case fits, the first step takes ten minutes.
